Wealth: By the system's standards, Jack was fairly well off. An established surgeon, and born into a well off family, he had saved up a rather hefty sum of money. However, his life is currently in a tail-spin and his funds are slowly draining, spent mostly on booze, drugs and gambling. He hasn't made rent in two months.

Living Situation: A nice, spacious and once well-maintained apartment in a very sought after area of New Tokyo. Lately the apartment has fallen into disrepair and he just received his first eviction warning.

Jack Shepard was born on Miranda, the son of prominent spinal surgeon Christian Shephard, Chief of Surgery at New Tokyo General. Although he believes himself to be an only child, Jack has at least one half-sibling, Claire Littleton (whereabouts unknown). From a young age, Jack was groomed to follow in his father’s footsteps, even though it was clear that Christian didn’t believe Jack truly had what it takes to be a successful doctor. However, determined to prove his father wrong, Jack went to the top medical academy in the star system, graduating first in his class. He is now a talented spinal surgeon, well thought of by his peers, and sought after by patients.

As a young surgeon, Jack met a woman named, Sarah, paralyzed after a shuttle crash. Believing her injuries to be uncorrectable, Jack gave little hope of recovery to her. However, he felt an emotional connection with Sarah, and during the surgery promised to fix her. Some of his doubts returned when, after the surgery, it looked as though she was not improving. He went running through the bleachers of Tokyo Hall, and there he met a mysterious man named Desmond who cryptically told him that sometimes you have to believe in miracles. When Jack returned to the hospital, Sarah was miraculously on the way to recovery, and Jack regained some of his lost faith.

Soon, Jack married Sarah, regardless of some of his doubts, but the relationship was strained from the beginning. A year later, Jack met the wife of one of his father’s patients. Seeking emotional comfort, the woman bonded instantly to Jack, and after her husband’s accidental death on the operating table, she kissed him. Jack wouldn‘t let it go any further, but stricken with guilt, he told his wife what happened anyway. She in turn revealed that she had been having an affair and wanted a divorce.

During the divorce proceedings, Jack became obsessed with the man Sarah was planning to marry, which was only aggravated by her unwillingness to tell him the man’s name. He began tailing her and after stealing her Com-Unit records and finding his father’s contact code on the list, Jack became convinced it was his father that Sarah had been having the affair with. It turned out he was wrong, and that they had been communicating in regards to Jack’s deteriorating mental state. Jack’s already weakened relationship with his father was then fractured even further.

Needing to get away, Jack took time off work and fled to Nanashi, living in a small village in the southern region of the moon. There he met a woman named Achara, a tattoo artist of rare talent. Her people believed that she was able to look into a person and see their soul, and that the tattoos she gave were a true extension of the person. After a brief and steamy affair, Jack forces her to give him a tattoo, even though the art has been reserved for her people alone for generations. The tattoo she gives him essentially means ’Outsider’ and shortly after he is forced to leave the village and is told never to return.

Months later, back on Miranda, Christians alcoholism had worsened to the point that it was now affecting his work. Heavily intoxicated, Christian made a fatal error during an operation, and while Jack relieved him and took over the surgery, he was not able to save the young woman. Jack turned his father into the review board, an act that Christian never forgave him for. Humiliated and without a job, Christian disappeared to Oublie. Distraught, Jack’s mother begged Jack to go after him, but Jack was too late, finding his father already dead, a heart attack brought on by alcohol poisoning.

After bringing his father’s body back to Miranda, Jack sank deeper into depression. Drinking more. Gambling. Developing a rather nasty pain pill habit. His job and his living situation are currently in danger, Jack’s life is slipping further and further out of his hands.
Do No Harm
Not known for his bedside manner, Dr. Jack Shephard is quiet and intense, blunt and sometimes cold. Almost always serious, its very rare that Jack lets his guard down and allows himself to have a little fun. His emotional reserve has caused him problems with women, problems which are only increased by his pattern of choosing mates he feels need to be ‘fixed’. Jack is a problem solver, a man of science, and will work tirelessly at a task until it’s completion. Often single-minded and stubborn to a fault, Jack will stop at nothing to do what he believes is right, even if others don’t see eye to eye with him. He is a workaholic, and often oversteps his boundaries, trying to solve problems that aren’t his to fix. He has a hard time letting go of things, to the point of being obsessive, but often Jack is the one to get things done when everyone else has given up long ago. For this reason, he is a natural leader. An outsider, a breed apart from all those who follow him. He can be self-obsessed, taking responsibility for all mistakes that happen around him, all turns of bad luck and hardship, even when he has absolutely no hand in it. One moment proud and arrogant, the next he might be bitter and self-effacing. He constantly struggles with feelings of self doubt and failure, plagued with both guilt and resentment over the fate of his father.

Jack Shepard’s got the weight of the galaxy on his shoulders, and it’s starting to break him down.
